Lost in the mêlée
Liliesleaf Farm is a piece of apartheid-era history worth preserving, commemorating and exploring.

Fifty years ago, on July 11, 1963, the police swooped down on a quiet family home in a rural suburb of Johannesburg. They hit the jackpot by raiding Liliesleaf Farm, the supposed secret hideaway of undercover ANC activists. Leaders of the ANC’s military wing Umkhonto we Sizwe were caught red-handed, with enough evidence to stage the Rivonia Trial and lock them up for life.
The Liliesleaf Trust has invested heavily in restoring some of the buildings, and creating new ones, including administration blocks and a café. In the ‘60s, Liliesleaf was in the countryside, but now it’s surrounded by shopping malls, houses and business parks. Yet as you pull into the car park, there’s still a sense of isolation, especially with so many empty bays and so few tourists.
