What can we do about burnout?

Burnout is now a pervasive occupational hazard, and digital tools might be worsening it.

According to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), more than half of South Africans want to leave their jobs. Globally, low employee engagement is costing $8.9tn annually, reports Gallup. Many of these issues relate to burnout.

Comprehensive, up-to-date statistics comparing current burnout rates to past levels in South Africa are limited, says Dr Colinda Linde, clinical psychologist and SADAG’s chairperson. “But anecdotal evidence and expert observations suggest an increase. South Africans face long working hours – some of the highest globally, according to Oxford University and the International Labour Organisation – combined with economic pressures and a post-pandemic shift back to demanding workplace norms.”
