Although Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez is often held up as a paragon of left leadership by fans in South Africa, South Africa actually spends more on social services than its South American counterpart.

Why then, are communities taking to the streets in protest? 

The left in South Africa – the real left, not to be confused with the ultra-left, the phony left or the new-right masquerading- as-the left – has a new icon: Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez. My leftie friends drool when Chavez shows a thick middle finger to the mighty United States. They talk excitedly about the rise of working class leadership. At last, here’s a man who really cares about the poor, they say. If only we could have a Chavez rising in South Africa, they sigh.
