A week in the life of a CISO

Cyber protection is a full-time job, which is why CISOs sleep with one eye open.

JP van Loggerenberg, SYSPRO, says being a CTO is an octopus role - you need tentacles everywhere.

Whether you call the role a chief information security officer (CISO), chief information officer (CIO) or information security officer (ISO), the reality is that one week often looks very different to the next. Technology means change and, with it, managing risk.

“Look at the CISO audience in presentations. So often people start by saying that in the technology sector, there has never been more change, more risk, more uncertainty…and you can just watch all the CISOs roll their eyes because this has been our bread and butter for decades,” says J Wolfgang Goerlich, an advisory CISO, Duo Security, at Cisco. “The nature of being a CISO is the nature of change. The threats and technology change and the models too as we move from classical projects into this world of DevOps, but change, for a CISO, feels natural. It’s the way the job works.
