But new technology is being mooted as a way to mitigate increased use of the fuel to meet energy needs.
Over 90% of South African electricity comes from coal power stations. And in response to the country's electricity crisis, more coal power stations are to be added to the grid. The problem is that this is at odds with pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, to which coal is a major contributor.
