Deregulation round two

WiMax has been touted as the next best thing to providing capacity to deploy data and voice services, but will the test licences issued in September hail the next round of deregulation?

02 October 2006

The entry of WiMax technology into the local market promises to alleviate at least some of the pain both telcos and ISPs have experienced in delivering last-mile connectivity. In a country where last-mile connectivity is such a challenge, especially in rural areas, the technology`s value proposition is stronger than it is in the more developed parts of the world. Initial reports from those tinkering with it are mixed.

The perceived benefits of WiMax have nonetheless been strong enough for a number of telcos, companies currently licensed to carry voice and data traffic, and an ISP to begin looking at it seriously.
