A battle is brewing

In the unglamorous space of server virtualisation, EMC subsidiary VMWare has launched a scathing attack on Microsoft. This signals an escalation in a war that will continue for the next few years, and is reminiscent of the browser wars.

In what it calls a “white paper”, virtualisation software vendor VMware boldly attacks several ways in which it claims Microsoft is trying to restrict customers` “flexibility and freedom to choose virtualisation software by limiting who can run their software and how they can run it”.

Microsoft seemed stunned, in both senses of the term. Globally, its response has been surprisingly muted, and locally its response was innocent surprise.
