Gambling on games

Video games publishers face an uphill battle, but moves by Epic Games to change distribution channels might make things easier. Just don't think it's all philanthropic.

Making video games is an unforgiving way to earn a living. Much like the film industry, it's a deeply creative and labour-intensive process. Projects take years of work, and most make little to no money. So when one of the biggest distributors offers you 100% of the revenue from your game, why wouldn't you jump at the opportunity?

The distributor in question is Epic Games. Most non-gamers have barely heard of Epic, but millions of parents (and neglected spouses) will be familiar with Fortnite, the smash hit that turned the game studio into an international powerhouse almost overnight.
