Die another day

In 1993, Richard Beytagh and his credit card started Novell South Africa in an office in Rivonia. On the eve of its tenth South African anniversary, the company is, contrary to expectations, still around, and, contrary to expectations, still going strong.

Once the standard in PC networking with its NetWare network operating system, Novell has been through the grinder in terms of competing with the worst of enemies in the IT industry. However, back from the grave, this unassuming software company from Utah has regrouped, refocused and is planning on being around for a long time.

The contribution the local subsidiary makes is about 1.2 percent of global revenues. The new headquarters in Rivonia, built recently at the cost of a cool R20 million, demonstrates the confidence of the local entity, as well as its commitment to South Africa.
