Internet-hungry South Africans have been disappointed by a quick succession of technology innovations that promised to raise performance and lower cost. Is there any reason to believe WiMax will be different?

The notion that WiMax may turn out to be the long-awaited leapfrog technology for unwired developing nations was bolstered when it cleared the final hurdle to widespread adoption. Certification of the first commercial products by the WiMax Forum occurred in January, essentially making certified WiMax a brand new technology on the market.
Since then, global implementation has been gathering momentum, including in Africa. The first deployment of a certified WiMax network took place in the Mozambican capital of Maputo in April.
