A programme known as ‘Prism’ is a wide-ranging effort by the US National Security Agency (NSA) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to collect vast amounts of user information directly from US technology companies. Its existence has been confirmed by US president Barack Obama.

The first to join this programme was Microsoft, in 2007. It was followed by Yahoo, Google, Facebook, YouTube, Skype, AOL, Apple and Verizon.
