They’re frogs, Jim, but not as we know them

There’s a great line from author William Gibson that you often see quoted in tech writing: “The future is already here – it’s just not evenly distributed.” The line itself appears so often that we’re even starting to see lukewarm takes on Medium about not using it anymore. Oh well.

Gibson’s most famous work is probably Neuromancer – about an AI with aspirations – although my personal favourite of his is Pattern Recognition featuring a protagonist who is essentially allergic to the trendy and marketable. Like the greatest speculative fiction writers and filmmakers, Gibson seems to have an uncanny knack for seeing what’s coming before the rest of us. I’m sure someone has already said this, but since I can’t find a solid reference, I’ll throw myself on that grenade: spookily often, it’s not so much science fiction as it is science future.
