Trello, launched in 2011 at the Tech- Crunch Disrupt conference, was created by Joel Spolsky and Michael Pryor and developed by their company Fog Creek Software. Six years later, Atlassian bought it for $425mn. The project management platform claims a community of millions of global users, but its actual annual revenue isn’t clear as it’s now tied up in Atlassian’s total revenue, which was $4.4bn in FY2024. In the broader productivity category, the platform (at 1.51%) ranks well below market leader Slack, which has around 35% market share, and Microsoft Office 365 (23.4%), but is ahead of its closest competitor Monday.com, which has under 1% market share.

How are local organisations using it? We interviewed Angela Ho, marketing director at Obsidian, and Nombuso Teisho, project and ops lead, Retroviral.
