The payments revolution

Why haven’t we seen more adoption of PayShap?

01 July 2025

Chipo Mushwana, Nedbank

PayShap is South Africa’s best kept secret. Put this magazine, or whatever device you’re reading this on, aside, and ask the person sitting next to you if they know about the real-time payment system, and the answer, most likely, will be one of incomprehension. It has been a little over two years since the service was launched to great fanfare, and while it is starting to see gradual adoption among locals, it has not been a runaway success, yet.

Right now, only about 2.5% of payments in South Africa are immediate, according to the Reserve Bank. Anyone who has sent or received an instant payment knows there can be no going back once you’ve experienced it. Gone are the days where the money will only reflect in your account in a day or two. To see money leave your bank account and appear in an account at another bank, in seconds, is truly amazing.
