Can number portability change the South African telco landscape and help create a more competitive environment?

Number portability is something for which the South African market has been waiting for more than two years. But countries elsewhere in the world began instituting the ability for telephony subscribers to change telcos, networks or service providers, but retain the same number as long as seven years ago.

The lack of a number portability policy and facility in the South African market, has for many users been the real excuse behind their loyalty to one or another network. In the fixed line space, until recently, there hasn`t really been a choice in terms of fixed line telephony to look forward to.
