Making an online buck or two

Fuelled by local broadband adoption, online sales figures suggest that there is much room for growth in the online retail industry.

01 March 2008

South Africa's online retail store managing directors all speak about their respective prospects both locally and internationally with a new sense of exhilaration. However, they remain tight-lipped about future projects so as not to be pipped to the post by competitors. Across the board, local online stores are experiencing a significant turnaround in interest and sales compared to previous years; this suggests a welcome upturn in the online retail market.

According to a recent study titled The Goldstuck Report: Online Retail in South Africa 2007 conducted by World Wide Worx, more South Africans are buying, bidding and selling online than ever before. The report states that total spend on online retail goods in South Africa in 2007 was expected to be R929 million, up from R688 million in 2006.
