An eye on Earth

Together with Google Earth, the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) have developed a website which enables the monitoring of over 200 environmentally sensitive sites across the globe.

Containing detailed information on sensitive ecological areas ranging from equatorial rainforest to deserts to glaciers, the 3D Atlas of Our Changing Environment is a boon for environmentalists, activists and journalists who wish to access facts pertinent to various areas. The effect of climate change and human impact, with comparisons available over a number of decades, is a useful, and sometimes shocking, feature of the site.

In a press release to IJNet, UN under-secretary general and UNEP executive director Achim Steiner stated: “If we are to change the hearts and minds of the global public we need to surprise, to excite and occasionally to shock. These images, allied to modern computer technology, do all three.”
