Joburg on fibre
Things get worse before they get better.
05 May 2009
Brace yourself for more digging up of metro streets as Ericsson lays down a fibre-optic network for the City of Jo'burg. The city’s grand plan is to extend a fibre network to every corner of the city of Jo'burg – stretching to its furthest outer limits. The trenching is set to start on June 1.
The City of Jo'burg has entrusted the job to Ericsson South Africa and Centratel’s Masakhe to build and operate a broadband network. At speeds from 2Mbps to 10Gbps, the fibre-optic network could turn Jo'burg into SA’s first digital city within the next three years.
