BMW X3 plug-in hybrid: Now made in Pretoria

There’s plenty to like about the BMW X3, which has been the company’s top seller since 2021.

Ninety-seven percent of X3s built in Rosslyn are exported via Durban, while the rest are sold in South Africa.

When BMW celebrated 50 years in South Africa in June 2023, a R4.2bn upgrade was announced for Plant Rosslyn, its first production facility outside Germany. The investment means that the plant can now make the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) BMW X3 for local customers and global export. The plant began production of the X3 in October 2024, which includes both PHEV and ICE xDrive models. According to BMW, all of its launch stock of 800 units sold out in South Africa; 10% of these units were the PHEV model.

The X3 was launched to the media in February 2025, which was also invited to get a first look at the revamped, state-ofthe- art facility and production processes in Pretoria, but was not allowed to take any pictures. The investment was spent on digitising operations and the installation process for the plug-in hybrid electrification of the cars, training staff and suppliers to handle electrified models, as well as new warehousing.
