When Tshepang Molefe fails to log on for our interview, I wait 10 minutes, then send a message that doesn't get read. It’s odd, because we confirmed the time a day earlier so he can’t have forgotten. When I call him, he answers, sounding terribly flustered, and asks me to give him a moment to download Zoom on his phone. Hardly the professional start I’d expected.
Then he logs on and tells me he’s in a hospital maternity ward, because his baby was born prematurely the previous day. He pans the camera around to introduce me to his bedridden wife. He’s instantly forgiven, and I’m impressed that he’s focused enough to conduct an interview.
