AI is seeping into our lives, but what effect is it having on work? Late last year, Anthropic looked at how its Claude model is changing the nature of work at the company, and surveyed 132 of its engineers. The research found that the engineers are now getting more done and accelerating their learning, but some worried that this meant losing technical expertise. And as the engineers worked with the model, they found they collaborated less with their colleagues. Anecdotally, in South Africa and abroad, many are using AI to summarise documents, analyse financial information, or prepare presentations, but it’s still hard to know what the net effect is, other than saving a bit of time.
