Women continue to orchestrate transformation and growth across South African industries, and, at the Vodacom Women’s Day Breakfast, they opened up about connections, shared insights and discussed the future of women in business.

Women’s Month in August honours the more than 20 000 women who marched on the Union Buildings in 1956 in an act of resistance that laid the foundations for the wider contribution of women to South Africa’s economy, leadership and social progress. It is also a month that asks leaders and companies to confront the existing barriers that affect the growth of women in their businesses and to change ongoing under-representation in decision-making and employment. For Vodacom, it is also an opportunity to gather women technologists in a room to talk about the future, the influence of the past, and the transformative potential women bring to business.
Nomsa Chabeli, Group chief executive officer, SABC, began with a reflection on the march in 1956. “Many women who marched towards the Union Buildings left their children behind; some carried them on their backs, many could scarcely afford the journey. Yet they all understood something profound: there are moments in history when remaining silent costs more than speaking out.”
