In a world that seems ever more contradictory in nature, it’s wise to remember the words of Great Gatsby author F Scott Fitzgerald: “The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function.”

There are many paradoxes to consider as an intelligence test today. One may want schools in rural South Africa to benefit from fast broadband, but also reject introducing dependence on an ecologically unsound satellite system run by a pathological liar. One can support the need for greater energy independence while disagreeing with Gwede Mantashe’s claim that he was “right all along” about increasing local fossil fuel production.
