Social media ban? It’s complicated
Restricting children's access to social media is gaining momentum globally. Turning it into a practical reality presents significant hurdles.
01 July 2026
On December 10 2025, Australia’s social media ban went into effect, prohibiting children under 16 from accessing social media platforms altogether, regardless of parental consent. Its Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Act levels a maximum fine of $49.5mn on the social media platforms. Meanwhile, it has emerged that around seven in 10 children remain on major platforms, showing that blanket bans are difficult to enforce.
Other countries are looking at similar legislation. Malaysia imposed a ban on June 1, and Greece plans to ban under-15s from social media from 2027.
