Robotaxis are sweeping the world, but Africa is set for a long wait.

We credit the lightbulb to one inventor. Yet, there were dozens, even hundreds, of competing designs and patents fighting for supremacy. Now, it’s not lightbulbs, but robotaxis. In around a decade, self-driving taxis have sprouted from pipedreams to flourishing industries, with many competitors eager to get a slice of this transportation pie.

To qualify, a robotaxi needs to be at level 4 autonomous driving, which means complete self-navigation, even if there is a human supervisor. While South Africa will have to wait for its first robotaxis, they are likely to come from one of the following companies.
