Born in Pretoria; worked hard at school; studied maths and computer science at the University of Cape Town; joined IBM in 1990 as a systems engineer; erred into Shell; fled back to IBM; then spent a couple of years at Cisco; did the gruelling equivalent of national service at the State Information Technology Agency (Sita) and then became the CEO of GijimaAst.
