There was a recent tweet showing white-knuckle passengers aboard an unnamed flight during a particularly bad spell of rough air, which was compared, so the post said, to South Africans listening to the Madlanga commission. Heads must surely roll when all is said and done. Surely. I cannot remember a year of such turbulence, much of which has issued from the door of the Oval Office. Seemingly not a day has passed without some kind of statement, threat, boast or deal. The mould of the US presidency has been broken, and much else besides.

The year has seen a doubling down on AI by the biggest technology firms. Nvidia, with its near monopoly, continues to report crazy growth of 62% and reported an increase in revenue to $57bn in its last quarter of the year.
