Managing higher learning diversity

Distributed campuses, staff, students, staff who are students, and contractors. Managing identities at UCT is a mammoth task.

01 November 2006

For the University of Cape Town's (UCT) ICT director Prags Naiker, the key component of the university's electronic directory project is to enable the department to automatically provision the large and diverse community on its campuses.

For the university, the e-directory solution is part of a ICT Strategy approved, at Senate level, in 2003. This strategy will see UCT redesign & implement a new network, manage and control its internet bandwidth, centralise and cluster servers where appropriate, implement storage virtualisation, streamline, improve and automate desktop and printing services, implement an integrated email and calendar system and define 'core services' and implement service level agreements with the campus community.
