1990s - There is a strong concern for the potential fees associated with being audited on improperly licensed software, causing companies to implement Software Asset Management programmes. 1998 - A group of software and hardware asset managers in the US begins meeting to discuss the need for a centralised organisation devoted to expanding and codifying information and knowledge within the IT Hardware and Software Asset Management fields. 2000s - There is an increased focus on internal controls and increased regulation. This results in a renewed interest in Software Asset Management. 2002 - The Software Asset Management Consortium is established. 2002 - The Software Asset Management Standards (Version 1.0) are announced to the media. 2002 - The IAITAM (International Association of IT Asset Managers) is launched. 2004 - The Software Asset Management Evaluation Programme is implemented using the Software Asset Management Standard. 2007 - The ISO/IEC 19770-1, the first international Software Asset Management standard, is introduced. _________________________________________
