How are local institutions using their learning management systems?

02 February 2026

Nadia Starr, South African Qualifications Authority

There are a number of learning management systems (LMS) on the market, among them Blackboard, Moodle, and Canvas from Instructure. The last two appear to be the most widely used in South Africa. In the past, institutions mainly used their LMSes as document repositories, and while that’s still true today, there’s now a lot more functionality. Learning and teaching take place on the platform, and lecturers can use them to prepare course content and assess students. LMSes can also support microcredential courses, which is a nascent area among institutions in South Africa. Adopting an LMS is an important decision, and will shape an institution’s fortunes in the competitive education sector. But how do they choose?
