How are taxi cab companies making do in the post-Uber world?

“I’ll tell you the reality,” says the Zebra Cabs driver as he pauses at an intersection. “The driver who doesn’t have an app…they are in big trouble. “Even those Mercedes-Benz guys in Sandton, they are in big trouble. I can tell you a lot of people, they don’t work anymore. Uber has taken over, but I think an app is very expensive.”

While Uber has revolutionised the taxi market, there are a number of other players in South Africa that believe there’s more than enough business to go around. Not everyone has a smartphone, and some still prefer to speak to a person and book their ride through a call centre.
