Exploring African solutions for integrated service delivery

SPONSORED: In Africa, we share many IT challenges that are unique to this continent. The public sector in South Africa can learn a lot from our fellow African countries in their journey to effective service delivery through technology, says Mark Reynolds, Commercial Business Director, Sub-Saharan Africa, for VMware.

"Amajor issue, that many African countries face, is that their IT environments are not as modern as they should be. A lot of the current systems are legacy. Systems need to be capable, secure and modernised to keep up with the demand for services and a distributed workforce, and also to ensure effective security,” Reynolds says.

Although the best time to update legacy infrastructure would have been a decade ago, the next best time is now. Modern infrastructure allows for more use of automation. This improves security, and also helps to address the challenge of staff turnover that is so common in the public sector, where an employee becomes skilled and capable, but a year later, is transferred to a different department. IT systems need to run in a software-defined datacentre environment that is not impacted by these changes.
