One of the transformations currently taking place within IT is the changing role of the traditional personal computer. Some have suggested the ‘death’ of the desktop, and look ahead to a world and workplace without them. Indeed, with the massive popularity of tablets, the introduction of ultrabooks, and the increasing adoption of cloud computing and virtualisation technologies, the clunky PC is beginning to feel like a bit of a dinosaur.
At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas during January 2012, we were provided with a glimpse of a last bastion of desktop computing tumbling. Razer showed off its Project Fiona – a super-powerful Windows 8-based tablet capable of running some of the latest games. And running them well.
