Cloud computing in the public sector
For many public sector entities, cloud is on the to-do list, but figuring out where cloud works best and how to migrate with compliance and security in mind are top priorities.

When the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies officially published the National Data and Cloud Policy in the middle of 2024, it was clear that government had changed its tune around cloud use in the public sector. The policy prioritises migrating government IT systems and data to the cloud and recognises that cloud technologies play a pivotal role in socio-economic development and service delivery. But it also lays out clear requirements to ensure that the right governance standards and oversight mechanisms are in place to keep information private and secure.
The National Integrated Cyber Infrastructure System (NICIS) cloud platform, called Sebowa (the Sesotho word for cloud) forms part of this cloud push, says Mervyn Christoffels, director of the Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC). The CHPC is the high-performance computing arm of NICIS, which is a national initiative of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, implemented by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
