Building a digital backbone
Rand Mutual Assurance Group CIO Keneilwe Gwabeni’s relationship with technology began with a crisis of confidence. She overcame her fears, and, today, uses technology to solve problems.
When I arrive at Keneilwe Gwabeni’s office at Rand Mutual Assurance (RMA), she’s meeting with two colleagues in her glass-walled office. She says later that she needs a thick curtain because she’s not sufficiently intimidating to deter every passerby from dropping in to say hi.
I’ve read that Gwabeni, the CIO, was afraid of computers the first time she saw one at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. “I walked into the computer lab, and some of the other students were already there, playing games. I thought, wow, there are people my age who can even play games on this thing. They’re already miles ahead of me,” she recalls.
