Are we really finding the best humans for the job?
Candidates are using AI to write their CVs. Recruiters are using AI to screen them. Have we automated humans right out of this vital aspect of human resources?

As a journalist who has for the last seven years been working in HR and management, I have had front-row seats to the AI revolution in recruitment. Given that I was mostly hiring writers and communicators, writing and communicating were key capabilities I was on the lookout for. Before November 2022, I was able to distinguish between the capable and the not-so-capable with a cursory glance at the covering email before I had even looked at their CVs.
Almost overnight, every hiring round became an exercise in wading through AI-generated text that was squeaky clean, but often told me almost nothing about the candidate. As Arthur Goldstuck said: “AI will make bad writers average. It will also make good writers average.”
