The business world is watching closely as the AI arms race between technology giants unfolds, but here in the Global South, there has been a quiet shift to sovereign AI.

For years, African enterprises have been happy to “rent intelligence”, a phrase coined by Reliance Industries Limited chairperson Mukesh Ambani. Ambani was announcing that Reliance Jio, India’s largest telco, would be committing $110bn over seven years to build sovereign AI infrastructure in that country.
