Africa’s billion-dollar megawatt race
Datacentres are ballooning across the continent, with five countries leading the charge.
15 April 2026
Africa is experiencing a datacentre boom. Even though its current datacentre footprint is less than 1% of global capacity, that is still a significant jump from the early 2000s, when the total was nearly zero. The past 25 years have massively reshaped parts of the market, with larger datacentres established in several African countries and hyperscale public cloud providers taking up permanent residency.
McKinsey predicts African datacentres will grow from 400MW to 2GW, delivering $20bn to $30bn in revenues. However, even that capacity is not enough for a continent that has 20% of the world’s population, expected to grow past 30%. There’s also limited readiness for the new generation of AI products that require even-more powerful and demanding datacentres.
