In hindsight, 2015 turned out to be a critical year for AI. As an MIT Technology Review article at the time noted, this was the year self-driving cars became a commercial reality, robots were picking up more and more work in Amazon fulfilment centres, and deep learning AIs that could parse language and hold conversations were being developed by Facebook.
