While travelling on the N3 towards Durban, I usually listen to a podcast or two to pass the time between dodging fleets of slow-moving, randomly lane changing trucks. In a recent episode, I heard something that was more surprising that seeing pantechnicons sticking to the left lane: a WhatsApp “bing” not only coming from the host’s phone, but acknowledged on air as a good thing.

This is surprising because it’s still the case that for most professional recording studios, cellphones are forbidden because they’re distracting, and may interfere with the recording equipment. As someone who has worked around a radio studio or two, hearing a WhatsApp alert in the background seemed like a professional affront.
