A mobile revolution

The adoption levels of mobile devices have escalated to the extent that the humble cellphone will soon be the ultimate GIS platform.

Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft with the vision of a PC on every desk and in every home. For the past 25 years or so, that had looked inevitable. But the PC has already been eclipsed by the cellphone.

The Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA) and Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) recently announced that there are almost two billion mobile phones in use worldwide. To put that into context, IDC South Africa's Hannes Fourie estimates the global PC market to be roughly half that - 988 million pieces to be precise - despite PCs having been around for considerably longer than cellphones.
