Sponsored: Spearheading mission-critical services

It takes real courage to be the one driving the technology strategy that will impact human lives, every minute of every day. The man rising to this challenge is Seni Hlongwane, CIO of the South African National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS), and a man with 11 Comrades marathons under his belt.

The role ICT plays in the NHLS’ service delivery to patients and their caregivers, primarily in public hospitals is vital, as 80% of South Africa’s citizens use these hospitals as their only access to medical care. It saves lives.

“We have to be functional, 24/7,” says Hlongwane. “IT and turnaround times are mission-critical. Lives can hang in the balance waiting for test results and accurate diagnostics so that treatment can begin. Add to this the R&D we do towards early warnings of new virus or bacterial mutations. We also produce snake, spider and scorpion anti-venom treatments, all of which are time-sensitive. Our labs never close.”
