A promise to protect genes

IBM says it believes it is the first major corporation to give an undertaking not to use genetic information in its employment decisions.

It is now becoming possible to predict a worker`s potential to develop a debilitating illness based on genetic tests.

In anticipation of such circumstances, IBM has now established that business activities such as hiring, promotion and compensation of employees will be conducted without taking a person`s genetics into consideration.

IBM Global Chairman and CEO Samuel Palmisano, said on introducing the policy: “It has been IBM`s long-standing policy not to discriminate against people because of their heritage or who they are.
