Commvault is a well-respected player in the data protection, storage and recovery space, but is it ripe for an acquisition?

The company under focus in this column is not a unicorn startup, or an under-the radar supplier of tech whose products we’ve all been using without knowing it; in fact, for some Brainstorm readers, it’s probably a brand name you’ve come across before.

Founded in 1988, Commvault’s heritage includes some big North American telco pedigree. It’s said to have operated as a standalone entity since inception as part of Bell Labs and became the computer data storage affiliate of AT&T Networks and, later, Lucent Technologies. Then, in 1996, it became a standalone corporation, under the leadership of telecoms veteran Scotty R Neal.
