Setting the data and cloud agenda

Government’s new data and cloud policy has been published in draft form. It’s not to everyone’s liking.

22 July 2021

After years of waiting for legal frameworks governing the growth of the digital economy, South Africa suddenly seems to have made a spurt of progress in the policy and legislative fields. With the government gazetting the report of the Presidential Commission on the Fourth Industrial Revolution late last year, the PoPI Act now in effect, and the Cyber Crimes Act being signed into law in June, it seems the pieces are starting to fit together. The latest piece, and one that will likely hold a foundational role, is the National Data and Cloud Policy, which was presented in draft form for public comment in April by the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies.

The original deadline for comments was extended until June and has now closed. Given the importance of the policy, Brainstorm decided to look at what the first draft covers to get an understanding of the good, the bad, and some of the key points of contention emanating from it.
